31st May 2019 Windsurfing: Alton Ressy Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 5-10kts Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 16.8 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.3 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Hooked up with Mike G for my first foiling session, on a sunny day at Alton. Wind 5_10 kts in the gusts. Wasn't bothered about the light winds as first attempt. Mike went out and was flying with his 7.5, RRD 120 and RRD foil which is amazing but he is light. After giving me some tips, set up the kit. Had done it a few times so no drama. Using a RRD ally mast / carbon wings 800 Fr wing / Ultrasonic 147 / 8.5 Goya mark. The bd is not "foil ready" so modified the top fin bolts by adding a bracket. Alton is nice for launching as no waves to bugger you up. Shot off on a gust and the board / foil went up into flight straight away and I went straight over the top, really shocked. I thought it would be gentle like a aeroplane! My arm starting aching holding the mast sailing around waiting for gusts and dodging the many dinghies. After 10 mins had another flight but this time amazingly made my first flight 10 or so secs then slammed back down, without going over the top! Kept trying same tactics, front foot resting on top straps back foot in the middle. Because I starting sussing killing flights to just off water didn't let it go up too often. When I did I faffed getting in the front strap and yep over the top! The RRD foil is very stable, and when not foiling, feels like a normal fin. The long 120 fuselage made tacking / uphauling easy on the flat water Great place for learning and will need 10kts constant wind to stop the slam dunks. Board stopped dead on the slam down, so I guess thats where dedicated boards bounce back up and make learning easier. The Board and kit came back in one piece but had to leave at 1pm. Cheers to Mikey G for the useful tips and next session soon. Dont think I will be foiling in good winds, would still switch to fin Foiling is harder than I thought! Its easy to get up, but to sustain the flight is the tricky bit for me. Hooked in the harness when not flying for a rest of the arms. |
